The posterior position refers to a position where the baby is looking 'forwards', towards the front of the mother's body.  About 10% of babies are in this position towards the end of labour when the women is first fully dilated.  An occiput posterior position at this time is associated with a higher chance of an operative delivery (that is, a caesarean section, vacuum, or forceps delivery).
